Basically the story starts with our main character, Emma, walking in on her roommate being raped by her boyfriend and she winds up shooting him. He is a Mob boss’s son, so she realizes that they are as good as dead anyway if they don’t run. Except she keeps hearing her brother’s voice in her head to go to Carter Reed, AKA the “Cold Killer,” that he would protect her. Knowing that he is her only chance, she goes to him, the killer she once knew as her brother’s best friend. Carter agrees to protect her and deceives her into believing he will protect her friends as well if she stays with him.
From here, it really is a good story. But there was NO chemistry between the two main characters. The love scenes weren’t steamy at all! I expected a lot more in this department seeing that Carter is a bad ass and all, but there just wasn’t enough detail to make it believable. One minute Carter was her protector and had been her brother’s best friend who avenged her brother’s murder. The next minute he was telling her he went after the men who killed her brother to keep her safe. Then they were confessing their undying love for each other. I wish there would have been a better lead up to their relationship and love for each other. I don’t know, flashbacks to the past or something? Again…something was missing.
On top of all that, I absolutely HATED Emma’s character. Period. She cried every two seconds and I couldn’t understand all the panic attacks. I mean, she saw her brother get murdered by the mob as a child, you would think some of that hardened her a bit? Maybe made her stronger? Especially since she knew the mob still existed. Usually the will to survive is greater than wallowing over events you cannot control. She was sooooo freaking whiny and I wanted to slap her out of it on multiple occasions. Another thing that irritated me was how unbelievable her character was! Get this…she thinks Carter is getting hurt and runs past the men protecting her straight into a room full of mobsters to go save him. Without a weapon or any sort of bad ass skills to possibly be able to protect him with.
Carter was mysterious, completely bad ass, alpha, and sexy as hell. When you think you know something about him, you really don’t. His character was way better than Emma’s in my opinion. He was hard to understand at times, but he did everything in his power to make sure Emma would always be okay. He was the reason I finished this book and found it “Okay.” I wanted to know what he had up his sleeve in order to save Emma’s life. I wanted to know what was going to happen next. He kept me engaged and completely made this book.
Another issue I had was the editing. I can stand mistakes here and there, those are forgivable and don’t ruin a book for me. I have found that some editing mishaps actually can add to a story. However, I HATE reading a sentence where words are misplaced or just plain missing from the sentence. It drives me nuts and as it continues to happen, it starts to disconnect me from the book. There were way too many mistakes in this book and it completely ruined it for me.
Overall, I really did like the plot. I love reading love story’s involving mobsters and people kicking ass, so this was definitely entertaining. There were just too many problems I had with this book to fully enjoy it. A lot of people have liked this book, so I’m not discouraging anyone to not give it a chance as these are just my opinions, but you might want to put it on the bottom of your list. For me, this was an epic FAIL.
