Evie and Leo met in foster care as children and formed a bond of friendship. As they grew, their bond turned to love, and they vowed to make a life together when they turned 18 and were no longer a part of the system.
When Leo unexpectedly gets adopted as a teen and he moves to another city, he promises Evie that he will contact her as soon as he gets there and come back for her in a few short years. She never hears from him again.
Now eight years later, in spite of the odds, Evie has made a life for herself. She has a job. She has friends. She's content. Then a man shows up out of the blue, claiming that her long lost love, Leo, sent him to check up on her. The attraction between them is undeniable. But, should she trust this sexy stranger? Or is he keeping a secret about what his connection to Leo is really all about and why Leo disappeared all those years ago?
New Adult Contemporary Romance: Due to strong language and sexual content, this book is not intended for readers under the age of 18.
The story starts off in the past with Evie and Leo saying their goodbyes. Both characters have been in foster care since childhood and were drawn to each other from the moment they met. Leo has been adopted and is leaving Evie, but tells her that she is his and asks for her to wait for him promising he will come back for her when they are 18. After this encounter she never sees or hears from him again.
“This is not goodbye, Evie. Remember our promise. Don’t ever forget our promise. I will come back for you.” ~Leo
Fast forward 8 years, Evie is 22 and works her butt off to take care of herself. With no family, but great friends, she has a much better life. Until she meets her stalker. Can I say game changer?! Jake is apparently a friend of Leo’s that he has asked to check up on Evie. After the devastation wears off on the news he brings, Evie quickly realizes how much she is drawn to this new man. Just from one touch she feels sparks!
Both characters were AH-MAZING! With a lot of books I’ve read lately, the heroine is so wishy-washy and annoying. Evie was NOT like that at all. She was strong, honest, and basically just a good person. There wasn’t anything catty, delusional, or any indication of a multiple personality disorder with her. She was real. Life handed her the worst cards imaginable and she managed to make her hand a royal flush. Not by money or status, but by being the amazing person she is. She never felt sorry for herself and just lived her life. Geez, I wish I could be like Evie! If you can’t tell, I totally have a girl crush on her!
Next up is Jake. Jake, Jake, Jake…ahhhhh. I really don’t know how to accurately express my feelings about Jake. He is sexy as hell, possessive, cryptic, unyielding with what he wants and damaged. I understood why he did what he did. I got him. He shows so much love for Evie even when he screws up.
“I don’t know if I did the right thing, Evie, but after I lied to you, I told myself that I’d just give it the time it took to make you realize that we belong together, and then I’d tell you the truth. It just got harder and harder to do and I was so damn happy to have you in my life, to get to hold you, and make you smile….”
This is a must-read book. I am floored that this was Mia Sheridan’s debut novel because it was astonishingly well written and completely consumed me. I loved how she incorporated flashbacks to the past so the reader would have insight to Leo and Evie’s hardships and relationship as children/teens. I will definitely be looking out for any of her future books if this is the caliber to which she writes. A wonderful depiction of second chance love, Leo is the book you will want to read over and over.
