When lawyer Anna brings her boyfriend Jason home for the holidays, it’s a recipe for family drama. Her parents have high expectations for her fast-track future. And those don’t include her hooking up with a kennel worker suffering the results of traumatic brain injury.
With a lousy memory and a shaky past, Jason knows he’s no prize. But what he and Anna have together is priceless. An impulsive proposal on the way to her family’s house seems the best way to prove his feelings for her are forever. Anna’s hesitation to accept stops his heart. And when she seems willing to use him to get back at her manipulative mom, Jason wonders if he’s made the mistake of his life.
Exposed to the light of critical eyes, Jason and Anna’s fairy-tale romance threatens to crumble. The hurdles of their pasts may prove too much for this princess and her pauper. And this New Year may ring in bright beginnings – or the end of all their hopes and dreams.
“Sometimes sex is just sex. It feels great, but the emotions aren’t fully engaged. Even a couple in love has their share of “just sex” encounters. But sometimes the heart opens up, a sort of inner light comes on, and you can feel how important the act is and how good you are together. That’s the kind of sex we had that cold winter evening. Jason thrust deep inside and opened his eyes to look into mine. We were connected, and nothing could come between us.”
“You ever experience one of those moments when your life is so damn perfect it’s scary? You’re secure in the love of the person you care most about, everything’s flowing smoothly and it seems there’s no place you could go from that peak but down? I have to catch myself when I start thinking that way. One life-changing car accident can make you afraid to trust in the permanence of good things. And it’s true that nothing lasts forever. But right now I’ve got Anna and she’s got me, and the New Year stretching out before us is looking bright.”
I loved New Year as told from Jason’s point of view. His honesty and ability to cut right to the heart of the matter is one of the reasons that I am such a fan. Anna was more controlled – but still very strong – about how she feels about Jason and Baby, the dog, made this installment as warm and sweet as a favourite holiday cookie.
