Tess is Q’s completely. Q is Tess’s irrevocably. But now, they must learn the boundaries of their unconventional relationship, while Tess seeks vengeance on the men who sold her. Q made a blood-oath to deliver their corpses at Tess’s feet, and that’s just what he’ll do.
He may be a monster, but he’s Tess’s monster.
“You stole my loneliness. I may have given you wings, but you’ve become my gravity. I’ll never be free of your force.” -Q
Brilliant, this is hands down the best book that I have read, possibly ever. Pepper Winters follow up book to Tears of Tess is beyond what I can describe in words, but I am going to do my best to give it justice. This book is dark beyond anything else that I have read, while still remaining a romance novel. This is an intense emotional rollercoaster that takes you into the belly of the beast that is human trafficking. Before I get to anything about the characters or plot, I really want to talk about how I felt when reading this book. Never have I sat down and been so engrossed in a book before, never have I had such a powerful physical and emotional reaction to a fictional story with fictional characters. Tears poured from my eyes through much of the book, and there were parts that I gasped out loud and grimaced in pain from what I was reading, and then there were those tender moments of unconditional love and redemption that cradled my soul. I was so engrossed in the book that after the first quarter I stopped highlighting quotes, I stopped talking, I stopped everything, I went into a catatonic cocoon, shielding myself from all of my responsibilities until I finished the book….I could not put it down. If you want a book that will make you feel the emotions, one that is an experience rather then a read, then this is it. Quintessentially Q is hands down the most emotional story that I have ever been engaged in.
I cant talk about the book without giving some spoilers away, but I am going to keep them to a minimal amount to ensure the integrity of the book.
Just when life is falling into place for Tess and Q something happens that will forever change their lives, their relationship, and who they are as people. Tess is used as a pawn in a plot of revenge against Q, and she ends up back in the hands of the men that abducted her from Mexico. She is mentally and physically tortured and forcefully string out on drugs to keep her under control. The way that the author writes it is so unbelievably realistic…the dream sequences, hallucinations, semi consciousness….it was as if I was there with Tess. Now, obviously I have not read every book that falls into this niche, but what I find is that a lot of times, there are serious threats made and they are either empty, or mildly carried out, preserving the characters sanity. This book is not like that. There is no holding back, there is no imminent danger that fizzles away, or unexpected changes that save the girl at the last minute. Pepper takes you to a dark sadistic place, one where you can’t possibly see a happy ending, or any form or redemption for the characters. This is not the kind of book that you will ever forget, you will read it, and it will stay with you, it will implant its self into the recesses of your mind and soul. The expectations that you will have out of dark romance novels after reading this, will be set so high that possibly only the great Pepper Winters will be able to trump herself.
In my opinion, the best way to describe this book is to say that Quintessentially Q is the love child of The Dark Duet Series by CJ Roberts and The Tied Man by Tabitha McGowan with a touch of FSOG, and my analogy is meant with the highest level of respect to all of the books and authors. There are two plot lines that are intertwined together to reveal impactful results for each main character. Tess experiences the lowest form or humanity and the depths that she must go to in order to survive, and Q discovers that the love of the right woman can make him a monster and a saint combined into one. This is brutal, its painful, its heart wrenching, but its romantic, and has a gripping love story about a man that would lay down his life and suffer the loss of everything he has just to save the woman that he loves. Q’s journey through this book was just as emotional as Tess’. Q battles to contain the beast within him. He has dark desires that he fears will lead him too far.
“I fucking shouldn’t want to beat the ever-living daylights out of her, but I did. Oh, shit how I did.”
Along the way, Q discovers his deep seeded feelings for Tess, and he embraces them, vowing to do everything and anything possible to save her and make her happy. He is forced to be gentle with her, and his need to care for her brings out a devoted and tender side to him that he never thought existed. Q takes on such a profound transformation of character through the events of the book, culminating in an inner balance that brings peace to him. What this man does and puts himself through to save Tess is so deeply and darkly romantic.
What Tess goes through is what nightmares are made of. Her strong mind and will to survive are put to the ultimate test. She has all of her dignity, sanity, and control stripped from her and she is forced to do unspeakable things in order to survive, while teetering on the edge of death. I cried for Tess, for what she had to go through, and for the mental ramifications of all of it all.
So to sum this up, it is an absolute must read. It is not for the squeamish, or lighthearted romance seekers. This is ruthless and sadistic, and the romance aspect is one that is so intense that it swirls with hate and pain and sacrifice to create a love of epic proportions. The descriptive quality, the writing, the structure, the characters, the plot…everything about this book came together to create an intense and profound literary experience. Tess and Q have a happy ending, in a culmination that I feel only Pepper Winters could come up with, it was fitting to the characters and the story, and it made the entire book worth the pain.
Go buy Tears of Tess and then Quintissentially Q, because if you like these kinds of books, this will be at the top of your list. It is phenomenal, fantastic, magnificent, mind blowing…every big word you can think of…is this book.
