Opposites in every way . . . except the one that matters
Shaw Landon loved Rule Archer from the moment she laid eyes on him. Rule is everything a straight--A pre-med student like Shaw shouldn't want--and the only person she's never tried to please. She isn't afraid of his scary piercings and tattoos or his wild attitude. Though she knows that Rule is wrong for her, her heart just won't listen.
To a rebel like Rule Archer, Shaw Landon is a stuck-up, perfect princess-and his dead twin brother's girl. She lives by other people's rules; he makes his own. He doesn't have time for a good girl like Shaw-even if she's the only one who can see the person he truly is.
But a short skirt, too many birthday cocktails, and spilled secrets lead to a night neither can forget. Now, Shaw and Rule have to figure out how a girl like her and a guy like him are supposed to be together without destroying their love . . . or each other.
The first Marked Men novel in Jay Crownover's combustible New Adult series.
Now I do want to say that there are mixed reviews, because some people found the editing to be bad. I have to honestly say that I didn't even notice, because I was too engrossed in the story. So in my opinion, it couldn't have been awful, because I definitely can't ignore blatant grammatical errors. I'm not perfect, and for an author who self-published this novel...I think it earns all the olives I'm giving it. And I hope one day that this book is picked up by a publisher who can fix all the errors others found distracting. But again, in my case...I didn't notice, because the story hooked me from the beginning until the very end.
The characters are just fantastic. There was a little suspense, some riveting emotional moments, family drama, character growth, a female lead who was actually amazing and not frustrating beyond belief doing stupid stuff that would drive me crazy, some seriously emotionally erotic love scenes that were both tender and titillatingly HOT, and tattoo bad asses...can't forget those (; I think fans of Rock Me and Leave Me Breathless by Cherie Lynn will love this book.
Rule is the black sheep of the family, but his twin brother always provided a buffer between him and his parents. Until one night of hard partying on Rule's end. His brother had gone out to pick him up and ended up getting hit by a drunk driver on the way. After his death, their parents blamed him for the death of their favorite child.
Shaw was best friends with Rule's twin, and everyone thought they'd end up married. But no one knows why that could never be, or how much she was actually in love with Rule. Shaw became part of the family during her younger teenage years since her own family wasn't that great. She's really the lynch pin that holds everyone together after the tragic death that had rocked their world.
One way in doing that is to make sure Rule visits his family every Sunday for breakfast, but Rule doesn't make it easy on her. Several times she's walked into his apartment to find the latest skank in his bed, and watched him run her off. But Shaw's skin is made of steel, and she doesn't give up on Rule. Even though she's already resolved to the fact that he'll never be hers.
Until one night changes everything...
Seriously...this book was awesome and so sexy, and just real. You won't find a whiny woman or an overcharged Alpha male wanting to club his female. There's give and take in this relationship, and there is healing and so much more. I urge you all to give it a chance if you love tatted up bad boys with a good heart, and a girl willing to do anything except roll over and play doormat.
