Katie Parks has been on her own since the age of fifteen. All she’s ever wanted is a place to call her own—a life that is wholly hers that no one can take away. She thought she finally had it, but with the strike of a single match, everything she worked so hard for is reduced to a pile of smoking ash. And she almost is too.
Now she’s being stalked by someone who’s decided it’s her time to die. The only thing standing in the path of her blazing death is sexy firefighter Holt Arkain.
Katie’s body might be safe with Holt… but her heart is another story.
As the danger heats up, sparks fly and the only thing Katie knows for sure is that her whole life is about to go up in flames.
Torch is definitely for those who have a weakness for sexy, smoldering, hunk firemen and a soft spot for sweet romance with a dash of suspense.
Someone has tied the unsuspecting Katie Parks to a chair in the middle of the night and lite it up like the 4th of July. When she comes to, the flames are licking at her heels, and she knows that death is near.
This is it. The last moments of my life. I'm going to die alone. - Katie
Holt Arkain took a calculated risk to save Katie. The flames were too much to go through the front door looking for survivors, but he knew that if someone was in side, taking the time to go through the back door, would die and he'd be too late.
He thought that this was just another job, but he never expected to react to the tiny redhead, and unable to leave her all alone in the hospital, he visits her while she's recovering. When she's finally able to leave, it's here we learn that Katie is alone in the world. She doesn't have anyone waiting for her to be discharged other than her savior, nor does she have anywhere to go. Everything she's ever owned has been lost to the fire, and there's still someone out there who is trying to kill her for reasons she doesn't know.
The doctor's are hesitant to release her by herself because she'll need help caring for the burns on her body, so Holt volunteers to let her stay with him. And while he's a perfect stranger to her, he's also the sexy fireman who saved her life and the doctors and nurses seem to respect and trust him.
I loved the instant attraction Holt had for Katie, and I also liked that she was resistant to those feelings...at first. This is a book where you'll have to suspend disbelief, because while our heroine has just experienced a horrific nightmare, she's still instantly hot for Holt, and there's plenty of flirting and banter going on.
Torch isn't angsty. It relies on suspense while trying to find a killer, yet the romances takes center stage. It's instalove and kind of predictable, and maybe a tad over the top with Katie being a 22 year old virgin and never having a friend throughout her life, BUT I can't deny I was hooked because Cambria Hebert knows how to tell a story. It was well written. My heart raced, the love story made my heart melt, and I liked the romantic suspense thrown into the mixture.
Overall this is a great book and it captured my interest and hooked me from page one.
