Two years after a devastating breakup, Brittni Mitchell has moved on from Justin Avery—or so she tells herself. But when she returns to Seattle for her best friend’s engagement party, Brittni finds herself the victim of a disastrously timed elevator breakdown. She’s trapped with the last person she wants to face, and forced to recount the past she desperately wants to forget.
She’s going to have to look back…
When Brittni left her podunk hometown for a big city college experience at the University of Washington, hooking up with a guy like Justin Avery was not part of her plan. Between Justin’s attention-grabbing tattoos, cigarette smoking, and bad boy attitude Brittni quickly chalked him up as " Mr. Wrong.” But his charm was unrelenting, and Brittni’s decision to give Justin a chance quickly turned into the worst choice she ever made.
So that she might be able to move forward.
Now she’s stuck with Justin—literally—and the complicated web of misunderstandings that tied up the truth for two years is about to unravel.
Our relationship was not the kind of whirlwind love story you read about. It didn't start with insta-love or even insta-lust. It was a slow build that progressed with each new detail we discovered about each other. Maybe it was our past failures at dating, or maybe we had somehow sensed that our relationship would be different from all the rest.
My actions had caused a sea of hurt and misunderstandings. I could have set him straight and defended myself, but his eyes held me back. When I looked into them, I saw nothing but anger and hate. The kind of hate that is incapable of understanding.
The story goes back and forth between the past and the present. The present has Brittni and Justin seeing each other for the first time in 2 years. Justin is bitter over their breakup and quite hostile towards Brittni, which makes them stuck in an elevator together very interesting. The past allows us to experience their relationship from their first meeting to the inevitable breakup. I loved the glimpses into their past, they had a strong connection and worked so well together. Their relationship was so lovable, they were not only passionate with one another but they shared some really cute banter. All of this just made their breakup even more emotional. I became so invested in their story, I found I had to keep reading to find out what happened between them.
"How could you do that to us?" Justin asked raggedly, finally meeting my eyes.
"Why do I still want you after everything you did?" he added harshly, tightening his grip around my hand until it was almost painful.
The story flows beautifully, even with the transition from past to present. Brittni and Justin are characters that you can connect with and by the end of their tale you are right there with them. This book has the perfect mix of romance, drama, angst and some beautifully heart-warming AND heart-wrenching moments.
